# Library Overview

> What the Library is and how its content is organized.

## 1. What is the Library?

The Library is the central archive of all content you can use in surveys. It contains scientifically validated instruments, reusable question blocks, and templates. You'll find the Library in the left-hand navigation panel.

The content is structured according to a clear hierarchy:

| Level          | Description                                                               |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Dimension** | The overarching scientific construct. |
| **KPI**        | A composite score that measures a dimension (e.g. Engagement).            |
| **Module** | A thematic grouping of questions around one topic, with a combined score. |
| **Question** | The individual survey item. |
| **Answer set** | A reusable set of answer options (e.g. a Likert scale). |
| **Template**   | A pre-assembled survey structure that combines multiple modules/KPIs.     |

<Note>
  Part of the content is **Wenite-managed and scientifically validated**. This content is locked and cannot be edited. In addition, you can create and manage your own client-specific content.
</Note>

<Note>
  "Instrument" is used in two different senses in the Library: a scientifically validated **source instrument** (bibliographic/scientific-origin metadata linked to a module or question) is a different thing from **building your own instrument** via the [Building an Instrument guide](/product/library/instruments-and-templates) (which really means "build your own custom content set"). Keep the two apart when reading the rest of this guide.
</Note>

## 2. Browsing the Library

The Library page itself has four tabs:

| Tab           | Content                                                                                                                             |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Explore** | A single search field across all content — the fastest way in when you're not sure whether something is a question, module, or KPI. |
| **Questions** | All individual questions.                                                                                                           |
| **Modules**   | All modules.                                                                                                                        |
| **KPIs**      | All KPIs.                                                                                                                           |

Each tab shows a table with the relevant columns and row-level actions.

<Note>
  Dimensions, Answer sets, and Templates don't have their own tabs here. **Dimensions** are chosen inline while creating or editing a module or KPI, not managed as a standalone list. **Answer sets** are chosen as an "answer templates" option while creating a question — see the [Questions, Modules & KPIs guide](/product/library/content-hierarchy). **Templates** are managed on their own, separate page — see the [Templates guide](/product/templates).
</Note>

<Tip>
  Use the **Explore** tab when you're not sure whether something is a question, module, or KPI — it searches across all three and groups the results.
